Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie is the orchestra chosen to accompany the semi-finalists of the renowned “Queen Elisabeth” Competition in Brussels. Founded in 1958, the Ensemble is based in the historic city of Mons – a former European Capital of Culture – and regularly performs in London, Bilbao, Tokyo, Paris and Brussels. Over the years, the orchestra had as soloists Maria João Pires, Janos Starker and Mstislav Rostropovich. Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie comes to Varna led by its concertmaster Jean-Frédéric Molard. Patrick Dheur, a pianist, composer, and winner of the Szymanowski International Music Competition, honorary citizen of his hometown Liège, returns to the festival with a special composition, dedicated to the festival’s anniversary. Concerto for piano and strings has a unique structure – the first movement is for left hand and orchestra, the second is for right hand and orchestra, and the two hands unite in the third movement. The title “Joined Hands” is symbolic for the Europe and its strength when united. Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden”, undoubtedly one of chamber music’s ultimate masterpieces and Dheur’s orchestral arrangement of César Franck’s signature “Prelude, Fugue et Variations” shape this thoughtfully curated program according to the values and spirit of the “Varna Summer” festival.
